The second (and last) album of 2020, released in December, was the first of four albums by the Space Quartet, published between 2020 and 2023.
I didn't personally know Rafael Toral until I received a phone call from him in November or December of 2018, inviting me to join the Space Quartet. (I remember, many years ago, seeing a solo concert of his at Teatro Taborda, which involved an electric guitar and feedback control that, at the time, seemed supernatural to me.)
A few weeks later, in early 2019, we were rehearsing with Nuno Torres, and we had our first gig (still as a trio) on February 13, 2019, at the dearly missed Bar Irreal in Lisbon.
A bit later, Hugo Antunes returned to his solid anchor-double bass position, and the Space Quartet had a period of intense activity between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, with 8 concerts: Maus Hábitos (Porto), Damas (Lisbon), Centro de Artes (Caldas da Rainha), ZdB (Lisbon), Teatro Viriato (Viseu), Casa das Artes Bissaya Barreto (Coimbra), De Studio (Antwerp), and Alice (Copenhagen).
In March 2020, just a few days before the first pandemic lockdown of this century, we were also in the studio (at ScratchBuilt), where we recorded what would become part of the album "Directions" (released in April 2021).
In 2021, we had 3 more concerts: Pequeno Auditório do CCB (Lisbon), gnration (Braga), and AMAC (Barreiro), which would be our "Last Set" (as a quartet). In 2022, with Yaw Tembe on trumpet and Riccardo Dillon Wanke at the keyboards (we were now the “Space Sextet”), we performed at CCC (Caldas da Rainha) and ZdB (Lisbon). For various reasons, this "musical-space exploration program" was suspended, but I hold it in a special place in my musical journey: because of the company of my fellow spacemen, the quality of the music, and the feeling of being a bit in orbit.
"Under the Sun" was the fruit of two live recordings in October 2019 (ZdB, Lisbon, and Teatro Viriato, Viseu), with Rafael Toral on acoustic and electronic feedback and amplifier, Hugo Antunes on double bass, myself on drums and percussion, and Nuno Torres on alto saxophone and electronics.
