about

disc 21 | 2018

The album “Hymn” was one of the last ones I recorded before becoming a father. It was January 2016, right at the beginning of the new year, just six months before Rafael was born. The recording (at ScratchBuilt) was one of those “late night” sessions, with the studio quiet and silent. Paulo Galão played clarinet and bass clarinet, Guilherme Rodrigues played cello, and I played a percussion kit. We had never played together just the three of us, and we never played together like this again. This meeting of three musicians on a cold winter night was crystallized, and it was a good thing. The recording is by John Klima, and the mixing and mastering (done between 2016 and 2018) are mine.
The album was released in November 2018, and the title (“Hymn”) refers to the hymn “Ut queant laxis”, a piece of Gregorian chant that is the origin of the nomenclature of musical notes, as we still practice it today. Each phrase of this hymn begins with a different note, always ascending (Ut/C, D, E, F, G, A). One possible translation of the Latin verses would be: “Let our voices/ resound purely/ recounting the miracles/ greater than life./ Let our tongues/ be generous in praises/ to you, Saint John the Baptist.”

with loosened voices,
Resound the wonders of your deeds,
Clean the guilt from our stained lips,
O St. John."
