The album “L'ennui” by L'Ensemble Instable is a studio work (in the sense that it was not recorded “live” in a typical concert situation). It consisted of a recording session with 11 instrumentalists improvising simultaneously while listening to a pre-recorded soundtrack. This ensemble was divided into two recording rooms (close to each other, with a line of sight between them) and, if I remember correctly, in one room were the wind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone) and guitar, and in the other were the strings (viola, cello, double bass) and voice, electronics, and percussion. We all had headphones (11 pairs of them), through which we could hear each other and the track with the sound of the organ (pre-recorded by Bruno Duplant) that served, so to speak, as a “score”.
The composer-improvisers were Chandi Oliveira on vocals, Ernesto Rodrigues on viola, Guilherme Rodrigues on cello, Marc Ramírez on double bass, Paulo Curado on flute, Bruno Parrinha on bass clarinet, Nuno Torres on alto saxophone, Eduardo Chagas on trombone, Ricardo Guerreiro on electric guitar, Bruno Duplant on organ and composition, Carlos Santos on electronics, and myself on percussion. We were recorded in March 2017 by André Sousa and myself at ScratchBuilt Studios in Lisbon. The mixing was done by me and the mastering by Bruno Duplant.
