I started playing with Nome Comum in early 2011. Over the nearly 5-year period that the project was active, we played around 16 concerts. I remember with particular fondness the one we gave in Cem Soldos at the Bons Sons Festival in August 2014, as well as the residency we did a few months earlier in May of the same year in Talasnal, a schist village deep in Serra da Lousã. Although “Cuco” was my last album to be released in 2013, it was mainly in the first month of that year that we recorded it. Thanks to the GDA Foundation’s vital Phonographic Edition Support Program, we spent a few days in the beloved Golden Pony Studio with our dear friend Pedro Magalhães at the recording console (he also mixed and mastered).
The album would be released in September, in a concert at Teatro do Bairro Alto.
The band consisted of siblings Bernardo and Madalena Palmeirim (vocals, guitar, piano, accordion), Gonçalo Castro (acoustic bass guitar), and myself (percussion).
For the recording of the single ("Cuco", track 2), we were accompanied by Simão Palmeirim (whistling), Pedro Faro (pedal operator), and Ana Luísa Valdeira (violin) and Ricardo Jacinto (cello), who played a string arrangement written by me. Today, I continue to play with Madalena (check discs 10 and 25).
