The first edition of 2021, published in April, was "Barbatrama," the third album by The Selva. In contrast to the two previous albums (and the fourth that followed), this one was created in collaboration with Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek), a musician and designer based in Rotterdam. The process involved recording a couple of sessions by the usual trio (Ricardo Jacinto on cello, Gonçalo Almeida on double bass, and myself on drums), after which the recorded material was then sent to Rutger for extensive editing and remixing.
This approach proved fitting for the times, as we recorded multiple sessions at OSSO (in São Gregório village, near Caldas da Rainha) in November and December 2019. Rutger carried out the edits and remixes between March and October 2020, amid the pandemic.
It's a distinctive album, filled with experimentation and daring moves. Yet, I feel that the trio's music served as both a safe harbor and a rudderless sailboat on the high seas, never allowing the shadow of a shipwreck to grow beyond a point of no return.
