about

disc 25 | 2019

It seems appropriate to talk about the 25th album on April 25, 2023, in a simple celebration of the 49 years that have passed since the fall of the dictatorial regime in which Portugal (sub)lived since 1926. “Right as Rain” is an album by Madalena Palmeirim that was recorded in the summer of 2019 and released in December of the same year. It consists of 12 songs in Portuguese, English, and Creole. The entire recording process was the first major project that Tiago Martins and I worked on together as FISGAstudio, a joint and coordinated studio project that had its home and laboratory in two rooms of ScratchBuilt. There were several recording sessions with different musicians and solutions, resulting in an intense and somewhat complex process, but one that resulted in this beautiful album.
The core “band” consisted of Madalena Palmeirim on composition, vocals, autoharp, cavaquinho, piano, and ukulele, Manuel Dordio on acoustic and electric guitars, and me on drums, percussion, and ferrinho. As guest musicians, there were Ana Luísa Valdeira on violin, Bernardo Palmeirim on vocals and acoustic guitar, Carlos Barretto on double bass, David Santos on bass and double bass, Francisca Cortesão on vocals and banjo, Gonçalo Castro on acoustic bass, Giulia Gallina on concertina, Inês Pimenta on vocals, Mariana Ricardo on vocals, bass, and pandeiro, Miguel Bonneville on vocals, Momo. on vocals, and Sara Carinhas on vocals.
The recording was done by Tiago Martins and me at our dear FISGAstudio. The mixing was also done by Tiago, and the mastering was done by André Castro. The cover art is by Pedro Faro.
