about

disc 33 | 2023

The album "Umbra, Penumbra & Antumbra" was published exactly one year ago. It is the first album by MEDUSA unit, an ensemble of acoustic instruments, electronics, and resonating objects with the following lineup: Alvaro Rosso on double bass, André Hencleeday on prepared piano, Eleanor Picas on harp, João Almeida on trumpet and electronics, myself on percussion, and Yaw Tembe on trumpet and electronics. The composition and direction are by Ricardo Jacinto, who also plays cello and electronics.
In about nine concerts since October 2020 (the ensemble formed at the beginning of that year), the resonating objects have varied: light steel profiles in varied architectures, bass drums, gongs. The music, however, has maintained an aura of mystery and entanglement.
This live recording — done by Suse Ribeiro (who also handled mix and mastering) and Nelson Carvalho — took place at the Small Auditorium of the Cultural and Congress Center of Caldas da Rainha, in December 2021.
Like the previous album (THE SELVA’s “Camarão-Girafa”), this one also made it onto the list of the best Portuguese jazz albums of 2023, according to jazz.pt.
