about

disc 32 | 2023

I consider The Selva's fourth album, published in March 2023, as a milestone that attests to some maturity in the trio's musical language. Perhaps it's due to the way it was constructed and conceived, as we composed and structured the six themes that comprise it, or maybe it was the beautiful “studio journey” on the day we recorded it. And although there wasn't a direct relationship with the final result, in August and September 2022 (already in the midst of mixing the disc) we embarked on a European tour with 18 concerts almost back-to-back, covering the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and concluding with concerts at Galeria Zé dos Bois (in Lisbon) and at Casa da Cultura (in Setúbal).

The “road” is part of a band's liturgy, and during those 22 days, we celebrated in the most pagan way we know: playing in churches, bars, boats, factories, clubs, and train stations, sleeping on mattresses without sheets, in welcoming homes, and in hotel rooms, covering 2,680 km by car and a bit more by plane. We met incredible people, encountered Portuguese in unlikely places, drank many beers, and had many long and enjoyable nights. The music "grew," and so did the trio: Ricardo Jacinto on cello and electronics (and harmonium on "Cocuruto"), Gonçalo Almeida on double bass and electronics, and myself on drums and percussion.

Returning to the album, the recording took place at Namouche Studios in Lisbon on December 8, 2021, supervised by Eduardo Vinhas and with assistance from Bernardo Centeno. Mixing and mastering were handled by Manuel Pinheiro, who has been with us on stage whenever possible, acting as a true "fourth element" at the soundboard. The cover painting, titled "Dead Rat Smiling, 2022," is by Fernão Cruz, photographed by Bruno Lopes, with graphic design by Travassos.

As a final note, I share the good news we received in early 2024: according to jazz.pt, "Camarão-Girafa" was included in the list of best Portuguese jazz albums of 2023. :-)
